Alytus, the sixth largest city in Lithuania located just 66 km and 105 km away from Kaunas and Vilnius respectively. The city is abundant with verdurous hills and forests; it is all about nature and the peace it brings.
Information about the city

Good geographical location/position makes Alytus an easily reachable destination. Surrounded by forests this city is just an hour away from the capital Vilnius and it takes even less time to reach it driving from Kaunas international airport.

Those who tour the city observe residential housings, institutions, churches and a synagogue that were built in the second half of the 19th century. Also Alytus has the highest pedestrians and cyclists bridge in the country, that was built across river Nemunas. Documented in the book of records this bridge is one of most recognizable attractions in the city. A short visit to dozens of museums will unveil the history of the city and surrounding vicinities.

The third of Alytus city is designated to green areas. Parks, flower gardens with walking and cycling trails are there for recreation and active leisure. It is the oldest protected territory in Lithuania and a part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme. Reserve Visitors Centre offers bird watching, educational tours to learn more about protected species, and a visit to an observation tower overlooking the lake of Žuvintas. Different protected parks cover Alytus district, which has more than 70 lakes and boast the peacefulness and goods of expansive pine forests.

As a capital of the Dzūkija – one of Lithuania’s ethnographic regions, Alytus lays claim to a long-standing tradition of hospitality. Visitors are welcomed to taste different alcoholic beverages while touring one of the most locally-known Lithuanian companies - Alita. Local restaurants surprise tourist with authentic dishes that locals and passers-by stop to taste.
